Halliburton leads 13th JDF Walk To Cure Diabetes
Houston, Texas - Halliburton Company is this year's presenting sponsor for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation's (JDF) 13th annual Walk to Cure Diabetes this Sunday, Nov. 2 at the Astrodome. Chaired by Zeke Zeringue, president of Halliburton Energy Services, the event anticipates 8,000 walkers, skaters, and cyclists, and hopes to raise $1 million for diabetes research.
Activities during the fun-filled day's event for all ages include a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) walk, live entertainment, prizes, rides, and a kid's tent with balloons, games, and clowns.
Zeringue has set Halliburton's contributing goal at $120,000 with at least 800 walkers represented at the event.
Optimistic that the company will meets its goal, Zeringue said, "Halliburton did an outstanding job on JDF Walks in Calgary, with 30 people collecting $9,000, and in Dallas, with more than 100 walkers collecting more than $14,000. We've got an enthusiastic Houston group and I'm confident we will meet or beat our goal here."
As city-wide leader of the event, Zeringue will kick off the day's activities welcoming and thanking everyone for their efforts. Registration begins at 8 a.m.. There will be warm-up exercises before the walk, which begins at 9 a.m.
The Walk To Cure Diabetes is the fastest growing fund-raising event in the history of JDF. Last year, over $23 million was raised through the Walk to fund diabetes research. This year, the Walk To Cure Diabetes is expected to raise over $30 million.
In 1996, over 200,000 people "walked to cure diabetes" at one of 100 sites throughout the country. This year, over 275,000 people are expected to participate. Funds are raised as walkers ask friends, relatives and co-workers to sponsor them for participating in the 10K Walkathon.
Approximately 16 million Americans suffer from diabetes. Heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, loss of limbs and nerve damage are just some of the complications that are associated with diabetes. Over 170,000 people will die from this deadly disease and its complications this year alone.
