New Red Detonator Eliminates Need To Suspend Wellsite Activities During Explosive Operations
HOUSTON, Texas - Halliburton Energy Services is introducing the Rig Environment Detonator (RED) for safer, more economical perforating, cutting and severing jobs. The RED Detonator does not utilize primary explosives and it eliminates the need to suspend routine wellsite operations like radar, radio, and telephone communications, cathodic protection, and welding before beginning explosive operations. RED eliminates the problems associated with static electricity in dry conditions that can interfere with explosive operations. Additionally, the unit is the most cost-effective safe detonating system available, when compared to the EBW/EFI safe systems.
The Halliburton RED Detonator incorporates passive electronic circuitry and semiconductor bridge technology (SCB) to protect the device from RF energy and stray voltages. The SCB technology has been proven safe and effective in both the military and automotive industries.
The RED Detonator also uses special deflagration-to-detonation techniques developed by Halliburton which eliminate the use of primary explosives. Because of the RED's unique design, no special downhole firing subs, special surface shooting panels, or digital program boxes are required to operate the device, thus eliminating the related potential problems.
The RED Detonator has been successfully tested by Franklin Applied Physics and Sandia National Labs against RF hazards normally encountered on offshore rigs. Therefore, RF transmissions can continue uninterrupted for RF field strengths equivalent to (or less than) those found on North Sea oil production platforms.
Franklin Applied Physics stated in its report, "...the Halliburton SCB detonator is the most insensitive electroexplosive device that we have ever tested in this manner."
The Franklin results were evaluated by a third agency in the U.K., ERA Technology Limited. They concluded that, "No hazard exists to the RED from typical measured or calculated ambient electric field strengths on North Sea oil production platforms."
Halliburton has successfully run several hundred RED Detonators in its field operations to date. The Detonator is available in three configurations; a top-fire version, a capsule version, and a sliding block version. These configurations cover virtually any oilfield perforating and cutting operation.
Halliburton Energy Services, a Halliburton Company organization, is a leading supplier of products, services and integrated solutions to the energy industry on a global basis.
