TRACS Enables BP To Set New World Record
WYTCH FARM, England - On September 12, 1995, British Petroleum set a world departure record on the M-5 ERD well at their Wytch Farm location in Southern England. The well extended 26,361 ft (nearly 5 miles) with a reach/TVD ratio of 5.0. An integral part of the bottomhole assembly was Halliburton's Telemetry Regulated Angle Control System (TRACS), which provides real-time inclination control during drilling. Measured depth for the M-5 well was 28,592 ft.
The Wytch Farm oil field is operated by BP Exploration on behalf of its partners. The main producing reservoir is the Sherwood Triassic sandstone, a third of which extends offshore. It was originally planned to develop this field using an artificial island. These plans were canceled in favor of an ERD program from an onshore site. According to BP, the use of ERD technology and elimination of the island saved $150 million in development costs and accelerated the production of offshore oil by 3 years.
TRACS is the industry's first intelligent adjustable inclination control system. It enables the driller to remotely adjust stabilizer blade diameter so that wellbore inclination can be controlled real-time while in a rotary drilling mode.
