BHP Petroleum To Award Halliburton Contract For Integrated Well Intervention And Workover Services

ABERDEEN, Scotland - BHP Petroleum Limited has issued an intent to award Halliburton Energy Services a major contract to provide integrated well intervention and workover services for its Liverpool Bay Development in the Irish Sea.

The contract for the provision of both personnel and equipment will take the form of an initial 5-year contract with three 5-year extensions. Halliburton will provide a number of its core business services including hydraulic workover, coiled tubing, stimulation and wireline. The initial contract and options are valued at approximately 20 million pounds sterling and could create 10-12 new positions.

"Quality and safety management systems will be vitally important in providing an efficient, cost effective and safe well servicing operation," said Brad Muir, BHP's division drilling manager - Aberdeen. "By aligning the well services management systems with those of the Irish Sea Pioneer and BHP within the context of the Liverpool Bay Development, a consistent approach to safety and work practices will result. This will lead to improvements in efficiency, benefiting both BHP and Halliburton. Halliburton will, through good performance, have the opportunity to take on an increasing share of the responsibilities within the Liverpool Bay well servicing team. We are focusing on maximising efficiency and will be pursuing ways to optimise the use of the OSV."

Halliburton was previously awarded a major 15 year contract by BHP to design, build and operate the innovative operations support vessel (OSV), M/V Irish Sea Pioneer. The Irish Sea Pioneer is due to arrive in UK waters in October and will go on contract in Liverpool Bay in November 1995. This contract has the potential to be extended through field life.

"This integrated well services contract is very important to Halliburton as it allows us to provide our core well servicing operations in conjunction with our OSV, the Irish Sea Pioneer," said Mickey O'Callaghan, Halliburton business development account leader. "BHP understood and appreciated the added value and additional opportunities Halliburton could bring to the Liverpool Bay Development by providing both vessel and well services. As the contract matures, greater efficiencies will be gained as vessel and well services crew work closely with BHP personnel in a team environment".
