Halliburton Fractures World Record Well For Mobil New Natural Gas In Germany
HOUSTON, Texas - Halliburton Energy Services announced today that its EuroFrac Team has successfully fractured the world's deepest horizontal well. The operation was performed for Mobil Corporation's Exploration & Production division in Germany, Mobil Erdgas - Erdoel GmbH (MEEG).
The first project of this kind in Germany, the work resulted in an increase in economically producible natural gas reserves. "In a pioneering combination of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, production of natural gas reserves, previously not considered economically recoverable, can now proceed," said Mobil Chairman Lucio A. Noto.
The Soehlingen Z-10 horizontal well, located about 40 miles southwest of Hamburg, was drilled into an extremely tight sandstone in the Rotliegendes formation to a vertical depth of 15,688 feet -- a world record for horizontal wells -- where it was deviated horizontally for 2,066 feet into the natural gas reservoir. Including the horizontal section, the well was drilled to a total depth of 18,860 feet.
In addition to being the world's deepest horizontal well, the well set a world record for the deepest multiple fractures. Hydraulic fracturing was employed to improve the natural gas flow from the extremely low permeable rock. Halliburton's EuroFrac Team successfully completed a total of four hydraulic fractures along the horizontal section of the wellbore using a highly-efficient and environmentally- friendly fracturing system that included Halliburton's HyBor Gel fracturing fluids and its Liquid Gel Concentrate.
Also critical to the operation was Halliburton's real-time 3-D computer simulation, which provided ongoing information on the fracturing procedure for optimum evaluation and control. Halliburton also provided the downhole completion equipment to Mobil for the world record well.
Flow testing, which began in January 1995, is showing economic production rates from a natural gas reservoir which couldn't have been opened up without this technology. This innovative combination of technologies, if proven successful in other comparable cases, is expected to help recover additional natural gas reserves in Germany.
Germany is Western Europe's largest natural gas user, with about 19% of its energy needs met by the fuel. With close to a 25% share, MEEG is the second largest gas producer and an established gas marketer in Germany.
