New Electrical Micro Imaging (EMI) Services Provides Superior Open Hole Resistivity Imaging

NEW ORLEANS, SPE - A new Electrical Micro Imaging service being introduced by Halliburton Energy Services allows oil and gas operators to visualize detailed geological features with a new degree of reality. Operators can use the EMI system to evaluate sedimentary features, textural characteristics, thin beds and fracture orientation with a new, high level of precision.

The 2-D and 3-D graphical interface produces images that are core-like in visual quality. This allows operators to better map reservoir sand geometries and diagenetic events across fields, reduce cored intervals by calibrating the image to the core, and more accurately place perforations in thinly bedded or fractured reservoirs.

The Electrical Micro Imaging tool has scanning electrode arrays on each of six independent arms. The superior imaging is produced through consistent pad contact with the borehole wall which provides an accurate, sharp image.

A real-time color scrolling image can be displayed on the graphics monitor of the logging system at the wellsite. A hardcopy grey-scale image with quality control curves is plotted in real-time. The analyst can view the images on an interactive graphics workstation and selectively apply various image enhancement techniques to highlight or optimize a particular feature or zone.
