Keeping an Eye on the Pipeline
Pipelines, both above and under ground,
are vulnerable to geo-hazards such as earthquakes, subsidence, landslides, or thawing of permafrost. These hazards produce ground displacements that can significantly damage both pipelines and their infrastructure. To detect early warning signs of these hazards and reduce the risk of damage, the stability of the ground surface around the pipelines is traditionally monitored with
ground based technologies such as GPS surveys, slope inclinometers, tiltmeters, accelerometers, strain gauges and thermistors.
