BackStop™ Water Conformance Control Service

When isolation of the water or gas zone is not an option, Halliburton’s BackStopSM Service may be the answer. This system, designed primarily for water shutoff, allows for the entire wellbore in the selected interval to be filled with the slurry and squeezed.

The BackStop Service helps controls unwelcome water production by introducing an exceptionally capable water control agent at the shallow part of the formation around perforation tunnels. Similar to cement squeezes, BackStop service offers additional advantages including the following:
  • Slurry is bullheaded into all open perforations, so no need for zonal isolation as with standard sealant jobs.
  • Shallow penetration of the filtrate allows for reperforation in the hydrocarbon zone.
  • Unlike cement, the BackStop™ slurry remaining in the hole does not require drilling out; simply jet it out with coiled tubing.
  • Longer and hotter intervals can be treated in one day, using the time allotted for wash out for placement instead.

HP/HT Before: water and hydrocarbon are produced. After: the BackStop slurry is bullheaded into the wellbore, the hydrocarbon intervals are reperforated and production resumes virtually water-free.

Using Halliburton’s H2Zero® Service Technology is the key that unlocks the best of BackStop service. The organically cross-linked H2 Zero service deploys a groundbreaking polymer agent that specifically targets and helps controls unwanted water production, making this one of the most viable sealant systems on hand.

When pumped and squeezed, fluid loss particles in the BackStop system form a diverting filter cake that uniformly places the H2 Zero polymer at a penetration less than 3 inches into the formation, creating a shallow matrix water shut-off once it sets. BackStop service can also be used in repairing casing leaks and sealing off thief zones, lost circulation zones or near wellbore channels.
