Oilfield Water Management

The ability to reduce and recycle produced water and minimize fresh water use can improve operator profitability and contribute to water conservation

Globally, oil wells produce about 220 million BWPD (barrels of water per day)—roughly three barrels of water for every barrel of oil. In older fields, the water "cut," or ratio-of-water-to-oil, can be 95% or higher. Managing this produced water is a great challenge for operators.

At the same time, oil and gas operators need water for operations. For example, in North America alone, unconventional gas stimulation requires 14 million BWPD to increase well productivity. Thermal enhanced oil recovery (EOR), which requires steam for the improved recovery of heavy oil, uses another half a million BWPD. And secondary recovery using waterfloods for conventional oil adds on another million BWPD. Thus, finding and transporting water for operations is an equally challenging prospect.

Halliburton has applied innovative processes and technologies to oilfield water management challenges for almost 100 years

From chemical and mechanical conformance tools to custom water treatment, we solve operators' water challenges with processes and technologies that reduce unwanted water production and treat produced water for disposal or reuse while satisfying a broad range of reservoir management and environmental objectives.
