Of all the methods currently being tested and evaluated for commercial use, so far carbon capture and storage (CCS) is widely considered to be the most practical—and effective—means to reduce emissions of CO2 and other GHG (greenhouse gases) into the atmosphere. CCS involves transporting CO2 from power plants and other industrial businesses to saline aquifers and oil and gas reservoirs. Once there, the CO2 is injected into the reservoir via a well where it is then monitored to detect and prevent leakage.
