Shales can differ in many ways. Perhaps the most important is brittleness. Brittle shale fractures easily. Ductile shale may not fracture at all; if it does, the fractures may close as soon as pressure is released. Attempting to fracture ductile rock with the same program as brittle rock wastes time and money. At every point between those two extremes, optimal fracturing may require different combinations of pressure, fluid and proppant size.
