What Makes a Good Play in Shales
It is very important to quantify the minimum geological characteristics necessary to develop a viable unconventional play - the thresholds below which the probability of success for delivering economic production levels is low. We use seven geological parameters as a first-pass screen: area (square miles/kilometers), average depth, net thickness, total organic carbon content, maturity, brittleness and gas-in-place. Once a play has met the minimum characteristics, the distribution of the shale properties will have important economic and operational ramifications in the areas of well spacing, well treatment, and fracture design.
Finding the "Sweet Spot"
Shale plays often stretch for thousands of miles. The experience in US shales confirms that these basins are far from homogenous. Changes in geological conditions, rock facies distribution and mechanical properties can happen as often as every 100 feet. Hence the disparity in the success of wells drilled right next to each other and using similar completion technology.
