Squeeze Cementing

Squeeze cementing, sometimes referred to as remedial cementing, is the process of using pump pressure to inject or squeeze cement into a problematic void space at a desired location in the well. Squeeze cementing operations may be performed at any time during the life of the well: drilling, completions or producing phases. Invariably, though, it is an operation undertaken to remedy a problem and presents the challenge of placing the proper amount of cement (or sealant) in the target location. Depending on the remediation need, squeeze cementing operations can be performed above or below the fracture gradient of the exposed formation (high pressure squeeze and low pressure squeeze, respectively).

Squeeze cementing is commonly used to

  • Seal thief or lost-circulation zones
  • Repair casing leaks
  • Remedy a deficient primary cement job (for instance, incomplete coverage or under-achieving top of cement)
  • Change the water/oil or gas/oil ratio by shutting off the breakthrough zone
  • Abandon a non-productive or depleted zone or the entire well
  • Modify injection profiles
